Ingredients
Scale
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
- 2 cups beef broth
- 8 ounces Gruyère cheese, grated
- 12 slices baguette or French bread, 1/2-inch thick
Instructions
- In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, for 20-25 minutes until deeply caramelized and golden brown.
- Deglaze the pan with the balsamic vinegar and cook for 2-3 minutes, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan.
- Add the beef broth and simmer for 5-7 minutes, until the liquid has reduced and thickened slightly.
- Preheat the oven to 400°F. Arrange the bread slices on a baking sheet and toast for 3-5 minutes per side until lightly golden.
- Top each toasted bread slice with a spoonful of the caramelized onion mixture and a sprinkle of grated Gruyère cheese.
- Bake for 5-7 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Serve the French Onion Soup Bites warm, garnished with a sprig of fresh thyme if desired.
Notes
- Adjust the amount of cheese to your liking.
- Fresh thyme adds a nice touch but is optional.
- These bites are best served immediately.
