Ultimate German Chocolate Cake with Decadent Coconut-Pecan Frosting

- 1/2 cup boiling water
- 4 oz German chocolate, chopped
- 2 cups sugar
- 1 cup butter, softened
- 4 eggs, separated
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 cup evaporated milk
- 1 cup sugar
- 3 egg yolks
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 1/3 cups flaked coconut
- 1 cup chopped pecans
Instructions
- Pour boiling water over chopped German chocolate in a medium bowl and stir until completely melted and smooth. Set aside to cool slightly while you prepare the batter.
- Cream butter and sugar together in a large mixing bowl for 4-5 minutes until light and fluffy.
- Beat in egg yolks one at a time, then add vanilla extract and the cooled chocolate mixture, stirring until completely incorporated.
- Whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt in a separate bowl, then add to the chocolate mixture alternately with buttermilk.
- Beat egg whites in a clean, dry bowl until stiff peaks form, then gently fold into the batter.
- Pour batter evenly into three greased and floured 9-inch cake pans. Bake at 350°F for 30-35 minutes.
- For the frosting, combine evaporated milk, sugar, and egg yolks in a heavy saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, for about 12 minutes until thickened.
- Remove frosting from heat and stir in butter, vanilla, coconut, and pecans. Allow to cool until spreadable.
