Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup boiling water
  • 4 oz German chocolate, chopped
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 4 eggs, separated
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup evaporated milk
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/3 cups flaked coconut
  • 1 cup chopped pecans

Instructions

  1. Pour boiling water over chopped German chocolate in a medium bowl and stir until completely melted and smooth. Set aside to cool slightly while you prepare the batter.
  2. Cream butter and sugar together in a large mixing bowl for 4-5 minutes until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in egg yolks one at a time, then add vanilla extract and the cooled chocolate mixture, stirring until completely incorporated.
  4. Whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt in a separate bowl, then add to the chocolate mixture alternately with buttermilk.
  5. Beat egg whites in a clean, dry bowl until stiff peaks form, then gently fold into the batter.
  6. Pour batter evenly into three greased and floured 9-inch cake pans. Bake at 350°F for 30-35 minutes.
  7. For the frosting, combine evaporated milk, sugar, and egg yolks in a heavy saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, for about 12 minutes until thickened.
  8. Remove frosting from heat and stir in butter, vanilla, coconut, and pecans. Allow to cool until spreadable.
