- 2 tablespoons milk (or more to adjust consistency)
Instructions
- Set oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease or line a 9×13-inch baking pan.
- In a large bowl, beat butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Add the egg and mix well.
- Stir in molasses until smooth.
- In another bowl, whisk flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, ginger, and cloves together.
- Gradually add dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until combined.
- Slowly pour in the hot water while mixing; the batter will thin out.
- Pour into pan, smooth the top, and bake for 35–40 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Let the cake cool completely before frosting.
- Beat butter until creamy, then add vanilla and molasses. Gradually mix in powdered sugar, adding milk as needed for spreadable consistency.
- Spread frosting over cooled cake. Slice into squares or make mini tortes for a fun presentation.
